- While trying to figure out how to get rid of that insanely retarded Outlook The Virus Propagator icon in the system tray, I learned something. Say it ain't so! Like all workarounds this is not as desirable as simply removing offending icons, but it is a significant improvement in terms of reclaiming lost task bar space.
- In short, enable "hide inactive icons". This turns on the "Customize" button to the right of that checkbox. The learning is that this button allows one to permanently show or hide any system tray icon. This puts a "show inactive icons" dingus on the left side of the tray, but that dingus consumes considerably less space than the icons that are "behind" it, so the net effect is more space on the task bar.
- Since the icons are locked as hidden or shown, the system tray never grows to consume the space that was reclaimed. Now I have about an inch and a quarter of new space, probably 150 pixels, which means that much less scrunching of the zillions of open windows.
BONUS.
- Hope this helps...
